Goldendoodle Coat Types

Goldendoodle coats come in three different varieties: Wavy, Curly, and Straight.  The most consistent indicator of coat type is the amount of Poodle in the parental lineage. However, there is no hard and fast rule for predicting coat types.   A Goldendoodle’s coat type may also change as they mature, so be careful if choosing a puppy based on their apparent coat type.

Wavy / Shaggy Coats

The wavy or shaggy coat type is the most common Goldendoodle coat type.  It occurs in all types of Goldendoodle generations and is considered the easiest to maintain.  It requires brushing a minimum of once a week, but more might be necessary in high friction areas (like under the collar or around the ears).  The wavy/shaggy coat is usually low to non-shedding, but not always (particularly among F1 generation Goldendoodles).

Curly Coats

The curly coat is also quite common among Goldendoodles, but is particularly prevalent among F1B generation Goldendoodles.  The tightness and length of the curls will vary depending on parental lineage, but can be anything from a loose barrel curl to a tight kinky curl like a full bred poodle would have.

This coat type requires daily brushing if it is to remain unmatted, although it can be shaved down to create a maintenance free coat if the owner prefers.  The curly coat type is almost always non-shedding, especially if the Goldendoodle is an F1B generation.

Straight Coats

The straight coat is much less common than the shaggy or curly coats.  It may occasionally occur in F1 or F1B generations,  but is fairly common in F2 and F2B generations.  Often referred to as the Golden Retriever coat, it’s very easy to maintain and requires minimal brushing.    This coat type is usually low to moderate shedding.

Genesis 1:21

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

    1. Hi Patty:

      The second generation Goldendoodle (F2 or F2B) is produced by crossing the (F1 X F1 = F2) Goldendoodle or a (F1B X F1 = F2B) Goldendoodle.

Thank you for your interest in our puppies!

  1. Our F1 Goldendoodle was non-shedding and had a straight coat of about 6-8″ in length overall. We just lost him to hemangiosarcoma. He was awesome both in appearance and personality. I would love to find another like him, although I realize a once-in-a-lifetime dog is just that. But I did want to let you and your readers know that some F1 doodles don’t shed and they can have long straight coats. He was beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Kathy, for the input on your straight coat Goldendoodle. I’m so happy that you had an opportunity to enjoy your very special friend. I understand very well the heartbreak that you just experienced, and the sorrow that you will feel for a long time.
